I just wanted to post my experience with the "mysterious" paulding light. I have read alot about it here, I have heard people talk about it, and seen a few TV documentaries on it. I am not the type of person that believes in things unless they can be explained. I have an engineering degree from MTU and I believe in a scientific explanation for everything. That being said, I want to say that I saw something that I cant explain. Sure, it may be car headlights, thats certainly possible. I can certainly accept that theory, if I am given a bit more explaination..... but there still has to be a valid scientific reason to explain the lights "behavior" even if it is automobile lights. I did see the light get very brite, and larger in diameter several times and it would dart around and descend down the hill into the vally. It would get brighter as this happend, then it would retract back up the hill and disappear. It also did the red, white change thing people describe. Someone there was familiar with the area and he drove his car around to the other side of the valley and parked his car facing us at the observation point. He flashed his headlights and hazzard lights. the paulding light was present all the time he did this, he stated he couldnt see the light at all. but the "light" was far brighter than his headlights and he was approxiamatley 500 ft or so from us. so I have NO idea what causes the light, but I can say its there and you can really see it. I guess I am willing to accept the headlight-taillight theory, but how does it change directions?, dance around?, go up and down the hill into the valley? get very intense in brightness? and seem to move toward you? what causes the light to do those thigns? I am really trying to think if its a reflection thing.....?? I dont know. but its very interesting. It was a fun expereince and I will go back. I dont really get into the ghost theories. There must be a logical explanation for it..... there just has to be. But what is it, thats the big question.....
I would be intersted in knowing has anyone credible really studied the light? I mean why hasnt a university sent a Physics expert to see it, or why havent police tried to solve it? There must be an explanation for it, why cant somone figure it out??
Myself and my family saw the light Oct 12,2005, it was incredible. We talked to some folks from Lucerne MI, they have a cabin nearby and go all the time and have seen it several times. I am from Seattle and found it absolutely incredible, it gave me chills. We saw red, green and white and it looked like a star. Would like to see it again sometime.
Don, several people have studied it; that old TV show "unsolved mysteries" hired some experts to go look at it.. They came up with nothing. According to the experts on unexplainedresearch.com, their investigation led them to believe that it is car headlights. However, they acknowledge that they believe the Actual Phenomenon may have stopped occuring a few years ago. I personally believe that the true Paulding light has become more and more of a rarity. It is true that headlights can be seen in the distance, because there is a long straight stretch of road back there. However, I have been there several times, and have seen both. Anyone who sees the real Paulding Light will know. Obviously, you did see the real thing. It's not very impressive to just see twinkling car headlights in the distance. (I know, I've been there a few times when that's happened.) So, yeah , it's been investigated, and nobody knows for sure....
Don, I too have an engineering degree from Michigan Tech. I have been out to visit the light many times in my years at Tech. I have never once been drunk or high at the light (or at all as far as illegal drugs go). The VERY FIRST TIME I ever saw the light was after midnight on a cold, dark November weeknight. Anyone who's been there knows how empty that road is, ESPECIALLY late at night. We barely saw ANY cars on the Wednesday night trip out there from Houghton. It was also VERY dark, meaning there were no moon or stars visible in the sky. This squashes the "star reflection" theory. The light was out the entire time we were there. It got brighter and dim, and turned red often, and even green once. I GUARANTEE that it was NOT car lights. The red light also did some crazy aerobatics.
Some buddys and I were out there one night when a Sheriff deputy came out and chatted with us for awhile. He claims that he patrols back there quite often (because of the common drug and alcohol consumption) and one time, his car failed to start, and another time, the light chased him out to the main highway. I am pretty good at reading people, and this guy showed no signs of pulling our legs.
I agree with the people who say that if you think you've seen headlights and tail lights, you more than likely did. But if you're like me, and you've observed the REAL light on one or more occasions, the hair on your arms and neck will probably stand up like mine is as I type this.
There's something not right out there. I too am open to a realistic scientific explanation (since I AM a scientist), but what I saw fits no logical explanation that's been put forth thus far.
