all i have to say is the paulding light is very frightning i personally think its evil because i was there last night with some friends and we walked to the crook passed the bericad as we were walking down we heard very @#%@ed up noises in the woods. there were also people in front of us they cam running so fast back up the hill and we ran 2as we got close to our car i turned around and noticd that the light went from left to right and dissipeared i asked why the people were screamming and ran they said that there was a black oval shaped thing floating in the air like 20 feet in front of them they said it was getting bigger ...it was very strangee they took off but we stayed still curious there was a lady there and she has been studying it for like 5 years and showed us pictures that were taken by her the one that really amaized me was one of the light looked like a human being kinda more like an alien..and right by it was a red light going up.its really freakyy u may think im making this up i would think that 2 if i heard this but wow im not that place is not right there is alot of negative energy there ..the light that people see and thin its the paulding lights not its cars way in the distance trust me wait for it it comessss close when the real light shows up...its not normal someones trying to cover it up. bring a video camera and tell me if it not goes dead there in like 2 minss mine did and it was fully charged the light is not telling us something somethings hiding in the area personally i think its not good and might seem to harm
i HAVE GONE TO SEE THE LIGHT 2 TIMES AND THE FIRST TIME ALL I SAW WAS CAR LIGHTS BUT THE 2ND TIME I WENT I SAW IT FOR SURE MORE THAN ONCE AND CAME AND WENT AWAWY ABOUT 3 TIMES AND THERE WAS NO WAY IT WAS A CAR CUZ IT CHANGED COLORS FROM WHITE TO RED AND DRIFTED TO THE LEFT AND STAYED FOR LIKE 5 MINS THAT SHORT STRETCH OF HIGHWAY GOES TO THE RIGHT AND ISN'T VERY LONG
I agree...the lady is loony!! ;D don't listen to the crap she deals because she just ruins the experience for everyone....want my advice?? sure, it could be car lights or some mysterious being...but, try to find out on your own...don't listen to someone else's opinion!!! and when you're out there...respect the people like me who go out there for the enjoyment...it's not just a party spot...i would know...i'm only 17 and I don't party there...just be happy knowing that you DON'T know what's going on. accept that this is one of the things in life we can't explain and just enjoy it!!! Friday night...paulding light baby.....!!

We went to see the light tonight and what a fake. It is sooooo obvious that it is headlights and tail lights in the distance. We had our binoulars and you could see the cars easily. There were other people there also and they said the same thing. We were disappointed and hoping to really see something cool. Oh well...
ive been out there, and i had a camera. it last a wile, but it was kinda hard to film because by the time the camera turned on and got ready, it was gone. but we did get some REALLY good shots of it a couple of times. Its not cars. we zoomed in (x300) and it wasnt a car. its way to far to be a car any way. in any case we're goin out there into the valley next time. and next time im gonna take my camera, cause mine isnt one of those old crap ones. if we get any good shots ill psot them on a website
Hey Jeff, I have visited the light twice now the most recent was 2 days ago (may 5th 2005). My first visit was last summer in august I believe, and I too met the scientist with the pictures. Did you see the one with the face in the mist? anyways on my first visit, I also brought my video camera and made sure both batteries were charged fully before I went. When I got there I set up my tripod and started filming. Weird enough about 15 minutes after I turned it on, my battery went dead. I was able to turn it back on in variables of every 15 minutes to tape another 15 minutes of footage. After about 90 minutes my camera went dead and wouldn't turn on again. Also my zoom features wouldn't work the whole time I was near the guard rail, I had to walk about 50 yard south to get my camera to zoom in and walk back to my set up. Anyways when I got home, I checked both batteries and both had a full charge. It was one of the oddest thing I've ever experienced. Also while filming, only the white light showed up on film, the red lights didn't appear at all on the tape. I just wanted to comfirm your report and let you know it happened to me too.
[glow=red,2,300][/glow]Hey nonbeliever: Did you do any research on this before you went and said it's head lights? Unsolved Mysteries, Ripleys Believe it or Not, and countless others have had specials on t.v. about this. There is also a reward out there for anyone that can actually PROVE what it is! There have been scientists trying to see what it is even. This has been recorded in the 1800's when there weren't head lights out every night. Every single night this is there. Doesn't matter if its a hot summer night or a frigid yooper night, its still there. I have pictures of this light and some odd things around it if anyone wants me to post 'em. Just let me know where to do it and I will! I've been out to this light more than 20 times.
i've been here several times and have seen the "light" and the light. By this i mean, the common light everyone sees and oo's and ahh's about is simply headlights. It is always white and always red, atmosphere causes the headlights to be other colors but the light in the "notch" in the trees is definately hedlights. The elevation of the location where you park is actually a little higher than the hill in the distance (verified with topographic maps and gps 3d lock) Although you can't see the road from the viewing area it is there, and if you look at any quality map you can see that the power lines run in a direct line north and intersect with m-45.
We had heard rumors of srange happenings at a place called "big rock" which is about a mile distant from the viewing area along the power lines. If you go there you will know you made it there because there is simply a big rock in your path. This area is private property and per "janet the ghost light lady" it used to be open but now because a small fire was started up there by partying teens. The property ownerss have since placed a lot of "no trespassing or you will be prosecuted" signs. From Big Rock it is even more evident that the lights seen from the viewing area are car lights.
The car lights -hereto referred to as the "lights"- cannot be seen as you move down the hill because as you descend you lose altitude and lose your vantage point. Most people who i have talked to and have seen the light -when not in quotes i am indicating the real light- not the "light" mentioned above. Several people i have talked to while at the site who had seen the real light have indicated that it comes from the stream area and moves upwards or hovers in the trees.
--Janet lady stores here Janet also indicated that there are "shadow people" who visit the area and a "Grey man" who used to sit up on the hill to the right and observe the valley with her. She also told me that one one occasion she walked toward the stream and there was an orb hovering above the stream with a portal in it possibly to another dimension. Of these claims i remain dubious but i listened to her politely and looked at several pictures, mostly of orbs which at night can be easily explained (moisture caught by camera flash, etc.) and some "plasma creatures" which had to be point out to me because they just looked like wispy fog. But she did have one orb picture that was taken during the day and it was convincing. --end Janet lady stories
So from what i understand there is the "light" that everyone sees that is car lights and there light that is real and has been seen for years and doesn't stay just in the "notch in the trees".
--NOW FOR MY EXPERIENCE--
I was on site in may and am mostly a skeptical person not believing a whole lot of what i hear and see but always interested in the stories and am a "see it for myself" kind of guy. We went to the light the first night and met Janet and she told us all sorts of stories (recounted in abbreviated form above)we walked down to the stream and on the way back up about 20 yards from the stream there was a drastic temperature change noticeable by both members of our party. We went back to our vehicle and sat and watched for the light and saw nothing for several hours except for the "light" . We left determined to come back on another night when there weren't 10 cars and tons of people drinking, shouting and being generally morons.
We came back on a Thursday i believe (maybe it was Tuesday don't remember exactly) and in the middle of the week you can go out there and be by yourself for we got there and walked from the viewing area down to the stream, across and back up to the other side. We walked back up the path and noticed nothing. we sat in the car and i had my camera setup on a tripod to try some long exposures. Once dusk started setting in the atmosphere became extremely suffocating and oppressive, again i am not a real believer just an interested observer but it felt like you could cut the air with a knife. We saw several tennis ball sized lights at various places in the trees and i believe this was part of the real light, or we were just looking too hard and seeing what we wanted to see. As dusk fell I wanted to get out of the car and retrieve my camera but at the same time i didn't want to it was really odd. I did go get my camera and we sat as darkness fell hard. About half an hour after nightfall in the darkness there was a syncopated tapping on the underside of our vehicle, 5 taps identical and at exact intervals. After about 20 seconds of silence another 5 taps exactly the same as the firs set. My partner and i looked at each other and were like did you do that??? I was ready to GTFO right then. But we persisted a but longer. We saw no lights and after a while another car appeared and like a heat sink, the atmosphere cleared, it was really really eerie.
We came back one more time that week and i really didn't want to go. I felt extreme dread and didn't want to go but I did. When i arrived (on a Friday) there were 4 or 5 cars there and the atmosphere was light and there was nothing at all going on you could feel the difference and Janet was there we told her of our experience and then hung out for a while and then left.
we returned 3 months later and visited 3 times over the last week (September 9, 14, 15) on the 9th we just hung out at the viewing area and noticed nothing.
On the 14th we made it a goal to go to "big rock" we got there and explored the area and it was too dark to take any really good pictures so we decided to come back the next day. However we did explore the rock and there is another portion to the north west of where part of the rock that is near the telephone is. It is about 10-20 yards back in the woods from the telephone pole. It is a larger rock outcropping and we walked around it to thoroughly go over the area, When we got to this part of the rock we notice a faint odor. At first we couldn't identify the odor but then it came to me, it was tobacco, pipe tobacco. We couldn't find the source of the smell but it was odd.
We went to the side of the hill opposite the viewing area and saw nothing, but when we got to the other side where there were people sitting and watching for the light and the informed us that minutes before we arrived a pale green light started half way down the hill and moved toward them getting close to the second telephone pole before vanishing. And everyone was still looking at the "light" i showed them on my laptop that the "light" they were seeing was car lights some believed some didn't but the light we saw (not the green light they saw before we got there) was headlights.
ONE NOTE: on this evening the headlights seemed particularly bright, i know they were headlights because i took pictures with my camera and you can see when you enhance the photos that they are headlights but for some reason they seemed to carry extremely well through the valley and even though they are several miles off still can light the inside of your car. This was odd but could have been something to do with the atmosphere.
The green light that the people saw is what i believe the real light is all about (not that it is just green but that is the color they saw)
We returned to the viewing location and big rock yesterday on 9/15 and snapped some photos, again we could smell the tobacco smell near the big rock which was odd and out of place but other than that nothing remarkable happened.
Thoes are my ideas/thoughts take them or leave them
Eugene, Thanks for your post. It was interesting to hear about how persistent you are on this. You sound like a curious realistic person with some scientific investigative skills. It is a nice change to have someone who had a minimal experience go back and try again even once. Most get a complex and assume that everyone with a different opinion than theirs is an idiot. I am kind of a believer that some people are going to be more inclined to see the real thing and some are not. I have been there minimal times and had great experiences each time. Others can go multiple times and have almost nothing happen but the usual car lights. I can tell you that the main part of the real light that I saw was indeed white but in no way could it be confused with a car light. You could put 100 cars at the top of that hill with their brights on and aimed directly at us and it would be tough to equal what the real light does. I think if you saw a green light especially off to the side it is probably part of the real light. I have seen green and also blue lights in addition to the super bright white light. Also the white light i saw could not be a car because it moved up and down well above (in the sky)and well below (below hill line) where the car lights are visible. Anyway, keep going back on the quiet nights and I wish you the best of luck seeing the whole thing. Trust me it is worth the effort.
Thanks for the reply i appreciate it and the more people we talk to in the up the more we are convinced that there is something more there.
We are planning on going back to the area in about a month and are really looking forward to it. And for those who want another reason to visit but saw nothing the first time there are the beautiful bond falls a short distance from the viewing area (4-5 miles i believe) So go look at the falls then go to the light.
I was wondering if anyone knows of any other interesting or paranormal areas in the western upper peninsula and Wisconsin.
When we visit the area we normally stay in the Iron Mountain area because we have friends there.
