I was just there on 3 days ago(sunday). Funny thing is, at one point the red light had blinking yellow lights around it...just so happens we heard a snow plow about 4 minutes earlier scraping on the road. It is without a doubt...vehicles.

Wow you debunkers think you have it all figured out huh? headlights? here is a question for you then. How do you explain the sightings of the paulding light before cars were invented, yes that's right I have researched this and there has been sightings of this light since the 1800's when trains were the main source of transportation and buggies. now I don't know about anyone esle but I have never seen a headlight or train light for that matter do what the Paulding light does. I am a Marquette native born and raised I have been to the Paulding light on several occasions and I was fortunate enough to see the real Paulding light on all of my visits there! also I would like to know how in the hell a headlight can be that big and bright and go up and down the hill like that swaying, dissapearing, and also turn colors like that. also anyone who has seen the real Paulding light will tell you that the colored lights sway back and forth and it looks just like someone walking with a latern! You debunkers believe what you want to believe but I know what I saw and there is no way it can be highway lights from 15 miles away. Also the store owner in Paulding must be a new resident there. If anyone on this site would like to set a date this summer to go to the Paulding let me know!

I want to believe the people that have seen the real light but what I was seeing both times I've been out there is car lights. The road is about 7 miles away and you can even see two distinct lights. When the light turns red, it's just a car driving away. I've never been there at dusk but I bet you can tell around that time. About the brightness, THEY ARE CAR LIGHTS. Drive down the Seney Stretch 12 at night and you will see what I mean. Is the paulding light there too because the bright light is there and I can Drive 65-70 down the road and finally pass the paulding light about 10 minutes later. I'm not going to do the math of car A leaves point A at 65 and ....etc because I'm hoping you went to school and did story problems. You can see car lights 15 miles away with no problem as long as it is in line of site and if you really look hard it can look as if they are changing colors and flickering but how do you know it's not just changes in the air. It's white light and has all the colors of the spectrum so it could just be scattering from traveling such a far distance. I'm not going to get into it but find out why the sky is blue in the day and red at dusk and you will understand what I am talking about. This does sound rediculous but it's my theory of why the car lights change colors. I will continue to believe the stories I have heard of the real paulding light but even people that have seen it say that it's cars and that the real light comes really close.

Um.............. Ok the light is totally not a car light because i have been there several times and have seen it walked down the trail. There's no way the light could be some car, but whatever.

I'm one of the biggest skeptics there is. And I'm not convinced that it is fake. I feel it is real. I've been there many times. I cannot explain it. I'm no expert, nor claim to be one. I enjoy the mystery and intrigue that it presents. All who doubt it, just don't want to understand it nor do they care. Hey I'm cool with that. Why argue about it. It's a light for goodness sakes. Find something real to have meaningful debate about. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion and express it. Those who know about the light, know about the light. I'm glad it exists, it is great cheap fun. If your reading this, I challenge you to go to it, make your own opinion and share it here. You'll have fun even if you are a skeptic. I meet people from around the world at that spot. They come from all over, I've met people from Australia, New York, Florida, England and Canada. All very nice, going to the same spot and questioning it. Pretty cool don't you think?

Those prizes are designed in a way that cannot be won. Its makes poor business sense to hand out 100k checks every week. The legalese and terms make it so the Ripley people can just claim "Those aren't the real lights" or some other dodge. Big monetary awards are scams but people find them highly convincing because they think "Ok, obviously no one would put up such money for a scam," but they're uninformed on how easy it is to create an unwinnable prize.
Also I take issue with the claim that "You need to prove its only headlights." Err, no. The person making the supernatural/extraordinary claim needs to prove their claim, which they haven't. The headlights explanation is a refutation of the supernatural hypothesis. For instance I can claim there's an invisble dragon underneath my desk and you can only feel the heat. You could say there's no dragon there and the heat is coming out of the computer on the floor. Then, as the paulding true believers say, that heat is not the real dragon heat and you have failed to prove otherwise. In reality, the extraordinary claim needs extraordinary proof. Thus the lights are about as real as my pet dragon.

My family went up there a few nights ago and all we saw was headlights! We were really disapointed because we had all this cool information we found about it and then it turned out that it was fake. Some people were actually meditating to it because they thought it would come down then...well it didn't. At night, it's pretty obvious that the lights are going to be bright because it's dark out! The white lights were brighter-headlights are lighter, and the red lights were darker-tail lights are darker! I guess maybe that whole thing about it not being seen in 3 years could explain it. Plus the lady in the gas station said that you'd need beer to see it- isn't that kind of a weird thing to say?

My family and I visited the site last week. We (five of us) were the only ones out there. No Janet, nobody else. The night sky was crystal clear. The area is literally pitch black except for the stars - and there were trillions of them up there. A real treat for us from the Fox Valley / Green Bay area.
We waited maybe five minutes before the first sign of the light appeared. It was small and red and lasted maybe a minute before disappearing.
A brighter, white light then appeared. It was very bright and very concentrated, almost "focused" directly at us. It flickered like a flame and changed shape multiple times during the two minutes or so when it was constantly visible to us. When the lights disappeared, they didn't just vanish all of a sudden like headlights or tail lights would do. They sort of flickered out like a flame would if the wind was blowing it out.
I did manage to take a photo of the light with the camera on my cell phone. Of course the quality of the photo is worse than an Atari 2600 video game, but the light is on there.
The lights would reappear and disappear every few minutes always with the "flame" appearance. Not once did the lights ever appear "close" to us, but the white light did become very bright in the middle of it's appearances.
We also saw some shooting stars and other things in the sky (galaxy haze, etc) you would never see except hundreds of miles away from any real "city".
IMHO, the lights *could* be from vehicles if hwy 45 does in fact run north past where the lights are originating from (since we were facing northward to see the lights). Just the colors alone (red and white) make me wonder if it is due to traffic off in the horizon. The red light is definitely smaller than the white light which also would make sense.
The problem I have with the traffic theory is the brightness and movement of the lights. Those lights were bright and focused, not like cars miles off in the distance. And when those lights moved....well, unless the drivers were drunk and weaving back and forth driving eratically, I can't believe those were coming from any type of vehicle. The 'flickering' motion isn't accounted for nor is the way the lights appear and disappear. Also, don't cars and trucks have TWO headlights and TWO tail lights? I only saw one light at any one time.
I find it amazingly odd that since the light appears every single night (or so I am guessing), that nobody has been able to track down a source. This isn't something that happens once every ten years or so. I mean if I had the time and money, I would spend some of it on finding out what those lights really are. Has anyone tried to follow the light directly up the path to the horizon? Is it like chasing a rainbow?
Although the myths and legends surrounding the lights may not be true, I can tell all of you first hand that the Paulding light really does exist - and it's very, very cool to see.

just tonight we walked up the path quite a ways, u conuldn't see the light since the viewing spot. We went back and got the car, there is a spot wher you can drive the car onto the path. we drove the entire path never seeing the light again. the path does reach the highway (aka traffic) so the car therory could be right. and the white and red colors with white being briter then red. but it didn't seem right. i dont think you could see the headlights or tailights for a full couple of minutes. either way it was very cool. on the path we turned towards the viewing spot and shined our lights. us and who evere was up their had a little blinking "conversation". anyway if it is real, i dont know. it didn't look five feet in the air (it was too dark to tell height). but who knows.

It's headlights from oncoming cars. The clip shows the headlight in the low beam first due to a car coming towards it. Note the red light down and to the right. When it passes, the car puts it's highbeams on and the"light" flares up. When another car nears that car it then lowers back down to the lowbeam. And we see another set of red tail lights down and to the right, but not where the first red lights were. This is still very interesting effect and would be worth seeing if in the area.

I live in Marquette, MI, and have been to the Paulding Light many times. The only time that I have drank or smoked anything was 1 year ago and it was 2 beers and one bowl. Not enough to make you see anything crazy. One of the times that I went there with my brother and some friends totally sober we got actual footage of the light coming down the valley towards us in our car and popping up right above the guard rail. Explain that to me Phil. How could a car do all that, come down that valley and up against the guard rail?
Also, a good buddy of mine went with some of his friends to camp out by the light. They walked along the rail road. They saw the light many times before reaching their spot. It would appear and disappear just like it always does. For about a half hour they didnt see anything. One of the guys turned around and noticed the light was now behind them. There were no cars driving by them during their walk. Therefore Phil, your theory is wrong.
I've only seen the lady with the pictures there ONE time out of every time I have gone and I have seen the "real" Paulding Light just about every time going out there. If you see the "real" Paulding Light you know it's not car headlights. If the light were just headlights and tail lights, don't you think Ripley's Believe It or Not or else Unsolved Mysteries would have figured it out? Both have been to the spot to check it out.
Also Phil, have you heard the story that was reported as the first sighting of the light in 1966? It's posted in the following link: http://www.backwoodswisconsin.com/paulding_light.htm The light actually was inside of the car. Explain car headlights appearing inside of another car with people sitting inside. Enjoy your reading.

There is the possibility that some of the sightings are lights from cars...but for many reasons it's not car lights all the time. One of the replies discussed these lights were seen in the 1800's - before cars were in the area. Another responder talked about lights in the rain and fog....I'm just wondering who can see lights from 7 miles away in the fog and rain....especially how bright these lights are.....it's also been mentioned that red lights are seen....yes, I've seen red lights but I've also seen green and blue lights....are they tail lights also?....I doubt it.....if anyone has walked to the far hill (where the light comes up behind) and are able to talk with others from the usual viewing area...the people at the usual viewing area can see the lights when the person on the far hill top can't see the lights. I've seen the lights last upwards of 10-15 minutes....is a car headlight going to be visible for that long while moving in a bouncing ball style? We need to also consider frequency and duration....I've seen the lights last only a few seconds and pop into blue, green & red ball shapes up to (like I mentioned) 10-15 minutes....cars would generally be traveling at the same speed (approximately, anyway) why would there be such a wide range of times that the light appears if it was a fairly constant traveling car? I've only seen basically one light...that splits up into 3 colored balls.....I've not heard anyone describe multiple white lights as I've got to believe there can and would be more than 1 car that would be seen....usually on most roads I've been on there's another car or 2 ahead of or behind me.
